If you've been around my garden (or my blog!) for any length of time, you know I swear by companion planting. It’s my go-to method for bigger harvests, healthier plants, and best of all—natural pest control without spraying a drop of chemicals.
There’s something beautiful and old-fashioned about letting nature do the work: basil guarding tomatoes, marigolds driving off beetles, and onions keeping the bad bugs at bay. It’s how our grandparents gardened—and it still works just as well today.
But let’s be honest—remembering which plants play nice together can get a little overwhelming, especially when you're standing in the garden, gloves on, staring down a tray of seedlings.

That’s exactly why I created these DIY Companion Planting Flash Cards for Vegetables & Herbs—so you can keep all that plant wisdom in your pocket (literally)! Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just getting your hands dirty for the first time, these laminated cards will help you make smart planting choices on the spot.
Today, I’m walking you through how to assemble your set, step-by-step!

Here’s how to assemble your flash cards step-by-step so they’re ready to guide your planting season after season!

What You'll Need:
Printable Companion Planting Flash Cards → Get them here
Color printer - I use this one
Cardstock (for durability)
Hole Punch - I use my trusty Crop-a-Dile
Corner rounder (optional but gives a finished look)
Jump rings, cable or twine to loop the cards together

Step 1: Print the Cards
Print the flash card files double-sided on white 8.5" x 11" cardstock. Be sure to print them front and back so the plant info is on one side, and the name or image is on the other.
💡 Tip: Set your printer to "flip on the long edge" for proper alignment.
Step 2: Cut the Companion Planting Cards

Using scissors or a paper trimmer, cut out each individual flash card. A paper trimmer will give you neater lines, but either works just fine!
Step 3: Laminate

Once all your cards are trimmed, place them into laminating pouches and run them through your laminator. This will protect them from dirt, water, and wear—especially if they live in your garden bag.
Step 4: Trim Again & Optional Corner Rounder
After laminating, trim around each card again, leaving a slight edge to keep the seal intact. Want to take it to the next level? Use a corner rounder punch to give each card a smooth, finished look. Totally optional, but it looks great!

Step 5: Hole Punch & Ring Them
Now punch a hole in the corner of each card. I used my Crop-a-Dile (linked below) because it goes through laminated cardstock like butter!
Once punched, thread the cards onto a jump ring, keyring, or piece of cord. This makes them easy to flip through and perfect to hang near your garden setup.

You're Done!
And just like that—you’ve got a durable, portable set of Companion Planting Flash Cards you can take right into the garden with you.
